Aura battles have their own vocabulary, borrowed from social media and video games. Here are the words you hear most, what they mean, and how people use them. They are listed in alphabetical order.
The words of aura
Aura. The charisma someone gives off. Counted in imaginary points: +1000 for a cool move, −1000 for a fail. Example: "He walked off without looking back, +1000 aura." Everything is explained in our article on aura.
Aura farming. Stacking up aura on purpose, with calm gestures and perfectly timed poses. The term comes from video games, where "farming" means repeating an action to collect resources.
Infinite aura. The maximum level, saved for legendary moments. In AuraBattlez, it's what triggers when a rhythm is played all perfect.
Based. Owning your opinions without looking for approval. Usually a compliment.
Cooked. Done for. Said of someone who has no chance left: "He missed three notes, he's cooked."
Cringe. Awkward, to the point of being embarrassed for the other person. A failed dance in public, for example.
GOAT. Short for Greatest Of All Time.
L and W. A loss and a win. "Taking an L" means losing. The L on the forehead gesture comes from there.
Main character. Acting like the hero of the movie. Main character energy: the feeling that the camera is pointed at you.
Mewing. Originally a tongue posture technique said to sharpen the jawline. As a trend, a silence gesture: finger on the lips, then along the jaw.
Mog / mogging. Crushing someone just by being there, often with a look. "He mogged him": he dominated him without saying a word.
NPC. Non-Player Character, a character in a video game that isn't controlled by a player. Said of someone who always repeats the same gestures or lines, with no personality.
Ratio. When a reply gets more support than the post it answers. By extension, coming out on top in an exchange.
Rizz. The talent to charm or flirt. The word was named Word of the Year 2023 by Oxford University Press. The rizz face is the expression that goes with it.
Sigma. The lone, confident character who follows their own rules. Often used ironically.
Slay. Doing something with style. "She slayed her dance."
Staredown. The face-off boxers do before a fight: locking eyes without blinking.
Sus. Short for suspicious: shady, not clear.
Trend. A social media wave: a sound, a dance or a gesture that everyone copies for a few weeks.
Vibe. The mood, the energy of a moment or a person.
How these words end up in the game
In AuraBattlez, the live chat reacts to every move with these expressions, and several became moves of their own: the mog, the rizz face, the mewing, the L on the forehead or the NPC. The characters never name real people: the moves are inspired by gestures that became memes.
What does "he's cooked" mean?
That he has no chance left of getting out of it, like a dish left too long on the stove.
What's the difference between aura and rizz?
Aura is your overall cool. Rizz is charm, the talent to flirt.
Where does the word NPC come from?
From video games: an NPC is a character controlled by the computer, repeating the same lines.
