The staredown, the no-blink face-off, played in AuraBattlez

An aura battle looks like a staring contest that got out of hand: two people face to face, poses, dances, and an audience that decides. In real life and in AuraBattlez, the same principles win. We put them to the test over hundreds of battles while building the game.

The rules of an aura battle

There's no official rulebook, but most battles follow the same pattern:

  1. The face-off. Both opponents size each other up. The first one to laugh often loses right there.
  2. The exchanges. Each player drops a move in turn: a pose, a gesture or a dance from the trends.
  3. The verdict. The audience, or a live stream chat, names whoever had the most aura.

In AuraBattlez, a battle lasts five rounds. Each round, both players dance a move and the aura meter tips to one side. If it hits the end, it's an instant KO. If it's a perfect tie, the battle goes to sudden death.

1. Play the right type at the right time

Every move in the game has a type. Cold beats Chaos, Chaos beats Hot, Hot beats Cold. A move that beats the one across from you earns a lot more aura, and a countered move earns less. This rule decides more battles than any other.

2. Read the bubble, but stay suspicious

Before each round, a bubble above your opponent shows the type they seem to be planning. Your move cards show BEATS when they beat it. But some characters bluff: their personality is written above your moves. A Bluffer lies often, an Honest one always tells the truth.

3. Timing matters more than power

A powerful move played sloppily earns less than a modest move played perfectly. An "all perfect" rhythm triggers infinite aura, which multiplies your gain. And a failed move loses you aura.

4. Save your Signature for the right moment

The Signature is your character's ultimate move. It costs 50 Hype, which goes up with every move you land. Playing it when the meter is close, or to finish with a KO, often changes how the battle ends.

5. Mix it up, or you'll get read

Counter-type opponents play whatever beats your last move. If you keep repeating the same type, you become predictable.

6. Use the location

Some moves get a bonus in certain places: the mog at the locked school gates, the mewing in the cafeteria, the griddy in the gym. Each move's card tells you.

7. Chain your moves

A few moves chain together: playing the staredown then the mog, or the striker jump then the mewing, gives a combo bonus. The game shows it on the move's card.

8. Calibrate your rhythm

If your taps always land a bit early or a bit late, it's not necessarily you: Bluetooth earbuds add a delay. The calibration in Profile measures it and corrects it in twenty seconds.
